Co-Founder/ Managing Director
Mr. Johnson is a managing partner of Pender Capital with over 13 years of experience in real estate acquisition, development, finance, and asset management. Mr. Johnson is responsible for the firm’s overall financial strategy. He has founded three successful real estate funds which employed value add strategies through asset repositioning while maintaining risk adjusted returns to investors.
In 2012, Mr. Johnson co-founded Latitude Properties LLC, a vertically integrated real estate investment firm focused on the acquisition, rehabilitation, asset management, leasing, and disposition of distressed single family residences throughout Central and Southern California. Mr. Johnson successfully oversaw the successful acquisition and stabilization of Latitude’s portfolio of over 100 homes.
In 2008, recognizing an opportunity to reposition assets in the greater Los Angeles residential market, Mr. Johnson co-founded and was Managing Partner of Paladar Capital Investments, LP and Montero Capital LLC, two funds specializing in the acquisition and repositioning of distressed single family residential assets. During his tenure at the helm of Paladar Capital Investments, LP and Montero Capital LLC, Mr. Johnson oversaw the acquisition of over $67,000,000 of distressed SFR’s with gross sales from disposition exceeding $88,000,000.
In 2006 Mr. Johnson served as Land Acquisition Manager for MDC Holdings Inc. and was responsible for acquiring suitable development sites for the nation’s 9th largest homebuilder. From 2002-2005 Mr. Johnson served as a Business Development Representative for Weyerhaeuser Mortgage Company, a GE Consumer Finance company. During his tenure at GE Consumer Finance, Mr. Johnson’s team originated over $525 million in residential debt.
Mr. Johnson holds a BS in Economics from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Co-Founder/ Managing Director
Mr. Tchen is a Managing Director of Pender Capital. Mr. Tchen brings extensive national knowledge of real estate and finance. Mr. Tchen is responsible for the Partnerships firm strategy and capital formation.
Mr. Tchen is a Principal of Synapse Capital, LLC, a financial management firm he co-founded in 1998. He began his career in the finance industry in 1973 with Irving Trust Company in New York City. In 1977, he joined Marine Midland Bank as Assistant Vice President, U.S. Multinationals. Mr. Tchen then became Senior Vice President and Manager of U.S. Corporate Finance for Banque Nationale de Paris in New York from 1979 to 1986. In 1987, Mr. Tchen assumed the position of Senior Vice President and Manager of Corporate Finance at Tokai Bank. In 1989 he joined DCH Auto Group in New York City, where he directed the company’s strategic planning and nationwide commercial real estate holdings. In 1994 to 1998, Mr. Tchen became the first CFO of Kingston Technology Company where he negotiated the sale of 80% of the company to Softbank Corporation for $1.9 billion for its two founders in 1996 and its buy-back from Softbank for $450 million three years later.
Mr. Tchen currently serves on the Board of Advisors of Pacific Castle, an owner and operator of shopping centers based in Irvine, CA and also serves as Special Mentor to the Founders of Harbor Pacific Capital, a Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm.
Mr. Tchen serves on the International Advisory Council of Chapman University to promote global education and address international issues. Mr. Tchen holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Economics from the University of Brussels, Belgium, where he graduated summa cum laude and an MBA from Columbia University.
Co-Founder / Managing Director-Originations
Mr. Murphy is Managing Director of Originations at Pender Capital. He brings over 13 years of experience in both commercial real estate finance and capital markets.
Prior to joining Pender, Mr. Murphy served as Managing Director/ Senior Vice President for Liberty SBF, a commercial finance company based in Philadelphia, where he was responsible for establishing Liberty’s Western Regional HQ in Los Angeles and directed West Coast originations and operations. Mr. Murphy personally originated over $60 million of commercial loans during the first year of operations on the West Coast.
In 2008, Mr. Murphy joined Silver Point Capital, LP in New York, a Goldman Sachs partner fund, where he was responsible for commercial real estate loan originations and insurance-linked securities trading. During his tenure at Silver Point, Mr. Murphy traded more than $500 million in distressed commercial real estate debt, insurance-linked securities, and assets in the capital markets.
From 2004 to 2008, Mr. Murphy served as Senior Vice President/Division Director of Velocity Commercial Capital. During his tenure at Velocity, Mr. Murphy was the company’s highest grossing originator in each consecutive year, responsible for more than $300 million in originations.
